Restaurant review: Umi in Winter Park

The emphasis is on elegant sushi and sashimi as well as fusion fare from a robata grill.

Located in the former home of Avenue Thai & Sushi in Winter Park, Umi also has an impressive selection of wines, sake and beers.

Strong suits included the naked tuna ($14), wrapped with rice paper, with mixed greens, a tangy crab salad, asparagus and a dab of spicy mayo; the shrimp tempura ($9), a cooked selection that was enlivened with cucumber, sesame seeds, scallions and eel sauce; and the rainbow ($13), a plump California roll topped with assorted sashimi and avocado.

The chocolate mille-feuille was transformed from a delicately layered treat to puff-pastry breadsticks with a side dish of thick chocolate custard, reminiscent of a skillful pot de crème.

Restaurant review: Umi Sushi Bistro is a place for ... - Richmond

But here’s the thing about Umi Sushi Bistro: The sushi, sashimi and other Japanese dishes are of such high-quality, even first-timers might be sold.

Many are sourced from Japan, including the seaweed used in its sushi rolls and the fish used in its stellar sashimi.

It included octopus (pleasantly chewy), shrimp (impossibly tender from marinating raw in natural acidic juices) and fish cake (a Japanese staple of puréed white fish shaped into pink moons).

The Richmond Roll ($16) featured delicate shrimp tempura fried to order, wrapped in seaweed with ripe avocado and then coated with sticky rice.

The Sushi Deluxe ($27) starred seven impossibly fresh and beautiful pieces of raw fish over sticky rice.

Restaurant review: We take a bite out of Umi Falafel ...

Now the Middle Eastern staple food, falafel, has a toehold on the avenue in the shape of Umi Falafel.

But if properly made, as is the case in Umi Falafel (it replaces the much-loved and lamented, late All Seasons Chinese restaurant), falafel is delicious, nutritious and inexpensively luxurious.

Yet the All Day Umi Plate for Two (I was hungry) was a substantial affair, with four stuffed vine leaves, two spinach rolls, a bowl of hummus and eight falafels, plus a salad chosen from the list of six.

The reason why this place will work, however, is because there is so much more to discover: who wouldn't want to try a Palestinian falafel sandwich made with Palestinian flat bread opened and filled with hummus, tomato, cucumber pickles, fried aubergine, flat parsley with chilli and tahini or the grilled halloumi sandwich, which currently makes frequent afterschool appearances in our house.

Prices are remarkable: you can get four falafels on a red and white cabbage salad with garlic mayo and tomato and coriander for £4.
